The Room of Death

Doesn't every house have a room of death? No? Well this one did and it was a million tones of brown and wood. This room has always been the office. It is an odd room, the shape of an "L" and the reason being the walls of the bathroom protrude into this room. The only thing we could think to do with this room was to keep it an office. This was Great Uncle Henry's office and probably the only room we kept the same, with exception of its over all look.

See, when Great Uncle Henry remodeled the house this is what it looked like. Well minus the toys and our family pictures. Everything else was Great Uncle Henry's or Tim's.

Now, I was excited to have one room without wallpaper, or at lease I was.  Do you see the wood on the ceiling? Yep, that is wallpaper. I called our friend with the wallpaper steamer and she has since gotten rid of it. I decided to go the old fashion route and use water and fabric softener, what a mess that was and guess what? It took 16 hours and I only got half the room done. I decided I was over it so I went straight to Amazon and purchased this steamer. It was the best $50 ever spent. It took a total of 4 hours to remove the other half of the room.

Now time to paint. The top paneling, trim and ceiling was painted Chalk White. The bottom paneling was painted Sherwin Williams Grizzle Gray, which is pretty similar to the Queenstown gray on my kitchen cabinets. I made faux roman shades for the two windows, purchased a storage bench from Amazon for under the window and Tim built two new desks. In reality the only thing we kept for this room was the little white table and art cart. Everything else was donate or re purposed.

These desks I wanted to be bar height and super simple, or at least in looks. If you ask my husband it wasn't simple to make, but I think he just says that so I stop asking him to make furniture. I found the stools on Amazon. I initially wanted something wooden or dark under the desks but when I used what I had I wasn't liking the dark. The boys can get on and off these and they are comfortable to sit on.

This room is still coming together. The bathroom door wasn't touched when painting because we are changing that to a barn door, which is a room we haven't started yet. Here is a picture of the room currently.

I want the decor in the office to be simple and/or functional. Check back for art and room updates, such as, what do I do with these doors? Black? White? Strip them and stain them a darker wood? And yes, I know I am missing a baseboard on the other side of the door.
